My hands have a mind of their own as they lead me through interior landscapes of color, shape & symbol. The intense Peninsula storms of 2008 brought down many branches & trees. This profound act of nature allowed me to explore infinite whimsical and intricate patterns inside myself and to provide an expansive and meditative experience for my viewers. My imaginative journey melds together the creativity of nature and my own augmentation of her expression in three dimensions. Branches of redwood, madrone or Monterey cedar and pine are my starting point, then these are trimmed and sanded to prepare the surface for painting. Next, I apply layers of acrylics in original symbols, swirls, zig-zags, circles and triangles. My designs incorporate current and ancient symbols. Natural forms are reflected in fanciful twisting and varied rhythmic colors and ever changing gem-like designs. Much of my work reflects the incredible beauty of the environment on the central coast of California. I am an ex-New Yorker with university degrees in liberal arts and visual arts. I have always sought what has not already been seen or done. Evolving my work into painted natural sculpture connects me with ageless symbols and the beauty in which I live. In 2004, I discovered Carmel and its ocean coastline, rocks and big trees. It has provided inspiration for my designs. |
